Survey

The ISTEX national test was run from October 1st to November 30th 2013, giving access to 146 document resources covering a wide spectrum of disciplines. An online survey enabled researchers and academic researchers to give their opinions on their contents.

Objective: evaluate the scientific value and interest of the resources on offer in the light of their possible acquisition in the framework of ISTEX.

1. NUMBER OF RESPONDENTS

The ISTEX national test was run from October 1st to November 30th 2013, and covered 146 document resources.

2033 replies from researchers were received. Some researchers gave views on several resources and the total number of responses on one resource was from 1316 researchers.

The Sciences and Technical field provided over half the respondents with Literature and the Humanities making up just over a fifth. Researchers in Law, Economics and Management and in Biosciences, Medicine, Health and Nutrition only provided respectively 8% and 9% of respondents. It should also be noted that less resources were tested in these fields.

2. DISTRIBUTION OF THE RESOURCES TESTED ACCORDING TO THEIR SCIENTIFIC FIELD

Details on the number of resources tested:
To enhance the comprehension and interpretation of results, certain packages of digital books were detailed although only one offer had been received for all the packages proposed. This took the number of resources evaluated to 162 instead of the 146 resources which were tested and the following results are based on the latter number. Sciences and Technical – Legal and Political Sciences – Economic and Management Sciences – Literature and the Humanities – Pluridisciplinary – Life Sciences and Health

Distribution of the resources tested according to their scientific field

The majority of resources tested came from the fields of Literature and the Humanities.

3. NUMBER OF RESOURCES COMMENTED UPON ACCORDING TO SCIENTIFIC FIELD

Number of resources commented upon according to scientific field
Only 11 resources in Literature and the Humanities and 4 in Life Sciences and Health were not evaluated by the researchers and academic researchers who took part.

4. DISTRIBUTION OF RESPONSES ACCORDING TO SCIENTIFIC FIELD

Distribution of responses according to scientific field
Although more Literature and Humanities resources were tested than Scientific and Technical resources, a large majority of responses concerned the latter. These replies regarding Sciences and Technical were split up as follows:

replies regarding Sciences and Technical
Among the resources in Sciences and Technical, Geoscience resources had the most replies from the researchers.

5. KNOWLEDGE OF THE RESOURCE BEFORE THE ISTEX TEST

yes : 60,16%, no : 39,84
40% of respondents said they discovered the resources consulted when they took part in the ISTEX national test campaign.

6. SCIENTIFIC VALUE OF THE RESOURCE

The general opinion on the resources consulted in the ISTEX national test campaign was very favourable as the results below show:
